Advanced Standing for Graduate Students

Advanced Standing Request Deadline

The deadline to submit advanced standing requests is August 15th. The department will not review advanced standing requests after that time and the student should instead register for the appropriate courses as listed on their matrix.

Students accepted into the 3.5 M.Arch program each fall may be eligible to receive advanced standing for a required course if they are are able to demonstrate that they have successfully completed equivalent coursework. Unlike waivers, receiving advanced standing decreases the total number of credits required in the program. Courses students may be eligible to receive advanced standing for include:

• ARC 511-Architectural Media 1
• ARC 512- Architectural Media 2
• ARC 501- Archiectural Design Studio 1
• ARC 502- Architectural Design Studio 2
• ARC 531- Architectural History 1
• ARC 534- Architectural History 2
• ARC 541- Environmental Systems 1
• ARC 542- Construction Technology
• ARC 552- Structures 1
• ARC 553- Structures 2
• ARC 573- Environmental Systems 2

Course descriptions for these courses can be found by clicking on the course above, in the advanced standing form or on the course schedule.

If a student believes their academic background allows for advanced standing, they should apply at the portal link below. As part of the application, the student will be required to upload course syllabi and show that they received a grade of B or higher in the equivalent course(s) on their undergraduate transcript. Advanced standing requests will be accepted until August 15th, before the student begins their program. Students who submit the request will receive a response from the department regarding their request before classes begin. Advanced standing requests after the academic program has begun will not be accepted.

Note: According to UB Graduate School policy, a maximum of 20% of courses in the 3.5 M.Arch (22 credits) may be approved for advanced standing. Approval may not be granted for additional credits.

Note: Students who are using an undergradaute level course from UB's Department of Architecture are not required to upload the syllabus for the course for their advanced standing application.
