A weeklong celebration of our work and the processes of learning and discovery behind it

Atelier April 10-14, 2023.

Published March 14, 2023

The School of Architecture and Planning invites alumni, friends and members of the university and surrounding community to join us April 10-14 for Atelier 2023, a weeklong celebration of the people, ideas and values that drive us.

Continuing a cherished tradition of the School that dates back more than 30 years, Atelier frontlines the work of our students and faculty and celebrates the studio culture and process of discovery across our programs.

Open Studio: April 12, free and open to the public!

Atelier’s signature Open Studio event, a School-wide exhibition inviting the community into our spaces for learning and making, will take place on Wednesday, April 12. Featuring work-in-progress from our studios as well as faculty research and projects in the community, Open Studio is a vibrant celebration of the creative and collaborative processes of discovery behind student and faculty work.

All are invited to join us at 5:30 p.m. in the Hayes Hall Atrium Gallery for a reception and remarks from leadership. Exhibitions and open studios will be installed throughout Hayes Hall, the Hayes Hall Annexes, and our fabrication and maker spaces in Parker Hall.

Beaux-Arts Ball is Back: Friday, April 14

This year’s Atelier program also brings back the Beaux-Arts Ball, a student- and alumni-led tradition reinstated as a celebration for the entire School community. The Beaux-Arts Ball has its origins in an annual costume ball given by students of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a tradition that continues today at many U.S. architecture schools.

Sponsored by UB’s Office of Alumni Engagement, this year's Beaux-Arts Ball is open to students, faculty, staff and alumni and will take place on Friday, April 14, from 6 – 10 p.m. at The Admiral Room at the Marin in downtown Buffalo (237 Main St, Buffalo, NY 14203).

Faculty and students: Help us plaster Hayes Hall with Instagram stories of your work!

In celebration of the spirit and drive behind all we do, we're wallpapering the Hayes Hall Atrium Gallery with a canvas of Insta-stories from our Instagram story feed @UBuffaloArchPlan. The wallpaper banners will be unveiled on Monday, April 10, with the kickoff of Atelier Week.

Here's how to participate

  1. Post your photos of your #WIP and your own processes of learning, discovery and engagement, from the studio and seminar room to the shop to the city and world around us.
  2. Tag the School and we'll add your Insta-story to our feed and to our wallpaper display.

Let's celebrate our story and immerse the community in the work of the School of Architecture and Planning and the processes of discovery behind it.
