Join our small and selective group of interdisciplinary students interested in pursuing promising careers in historic preservation. Designed for practitioners and students from disciplines as diverse as architecture, law, and art, our curriculum includes an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation and a Master of Science in Architecture specializing in Historic Preservation.

Our curriculum emphasizes innovation, critical thinking, independent research, and collaborative projects. Here, you’ll combine professional study with the interdisciplinary depth of a flagship campus of The State University of New York (SUNY) system and the most comprehensive public research university in the Northeast, empowering our students to activate their passion for building healthy, equitable, and vibrant communities.

Offering the only accredited Master of Architecture program in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, recognized by the National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB).

Offering a fully accredited Master of Urban Planning program in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, our students work in partnership with faculty to connect the art of planning with policymaking, community advocacy, geospatial analysis, and more.

Students in the MS in Architecture program may choose to focus their path of study on Design for Manufacturing and Construction. This new concentration is intended to meet the demand for skilled designers that can bridge the gap between design, architectural fabrication, and construction to manage and deliver complex projects at different scales. 

This program provides a fusion of academic rigor and real-world applicability that not only positions graduates for success, but also underscores our commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders in the ever-evolving realm of real estate. Students explore complex trends including place-making and urban design, mixed-income housing and community development, suburban transformation, sustainable development, energy innovation, and the effects of technology in the workplace.

This program prepares students for professional careers in historic preservation — a complex and interdisciplinary field that encompasses concepts, methods, and skills from architecture, cultural landscapes, preservation, planning, building technology, project management, documentation, interpretation, and representation.

Dual-degree programs are available for students entering our graduate degree programs. Students can pursue research and advanced studies by combining degrees like the MS in Architecture with an MUP, MArch or other graduate degree programs across UB.
