We’re more than just a school — we’re a community. Located in Buffalo, NY with lively urban neighborhoods, historic buildings, and world-class art galleries, our city is home to extraordinary art and design. Known as the “city of good neighbors,” we welcome you to explore our flourishing waterfront, local cuisine, and storied history. Home to four professional sports teams, bustling nightlife, and a diverse citizenry — Buffalo offers our students a rich environment for living and learning.
Our state-of-the-art facilities include Hayes Hall, a nationally significant architectural landmark that reopened in 2016 after a comprehensive renovation that sets standards in historic preservation, inspirational design and sustainability. Our primary undergraduate studio spaces are held in Crosby Hall, which was also recently renovated. Research and fabrication facilities offer the latest digital technologies, printing services and a fully-equipped materials and methods shop, allowing students to visualize, fabricate and develop their ideas and skills.
Hayes Hall
Our historic home in Hayes Hall reopened in 2016 after a $45 million restoration that has revived an iconic UB landmark and created a flexible, dynamic learning environment for future architects and planners.
Crosby Hall
Designed by E.B. Green and a centerpiece of UB’s South Campus, Crosby Hall underwent a $28 million makeover — inside and out — in 2023. The building retains its historic fabric while now boasting an open layout with plenty of natural light, providing students with studio spaces that support collaborative learning and access to lounges, galleries, and the technology required of a 21st-century university experience.
Architecture and Planning Library
The APL, located in historic Abbott Hall, is one of nine units of the UB Libraries. Part of the largest library network in the SUNY system, the APL contains more than 31,000 books and 130 journal subscriptions and features a satellite Reading Room in Hayes Hall. A dedicated librarian, online resources, workshops, and research guides assist students with both course-focused and independent research.
The Shop is the hub of our think-through-making curriculum. Equipped for fabrication of all types, it serves both as a space to execute coursework and as a think-tank and makerspace for collaborative research with design practice and industry. Broken into distinct areas — for woodworking, metalworking, assembly, and the digital FabLab — we provide versatility to work across multiple scales from model and component building to full-scale prototyping and installations.
Digital Labs
Distributed throughout the School, our labs offer a wide range of digital platforms and tools, from graphic design and 3D architectural modeling to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). With access to sophisticated multi-media printing environments and AR/VR equipment, students are prepared to visualize, fabricate, test, and expand their ideas and skills.
