Building on work from the inaugural ACAW in 2016, this workshop will gather architects, engineers, ceramic artists and manufacturers to explore state of the art applications for terracotta in architecture. The focus will be on bioclimatic performance, where environmental factors like light, heat, cold, wind and precipitation are thoughtfully addressed by designs that utilize ceramic’s material qualities and properties.
August 17
3 pm - 7:30 pm
Hotel Henry
444 Forest Avenue, Buffalo
2 AIA Continuing Education Units
Four teams, led by principals from AECOM, Walter P. Moore, Morphosis, UB Department of Architecture, Alfred University College of Ceramics and Boston Valley Terra Cotta will share their research and design prototypes for terracotta façade systems that focus on bioclimatic performance. These strategize ways to develop sustainable micro climates in and around buildings and address issues like energy mitigation, hybrid structural systems and high performance façade systems for shading, snow collecting, heat harvesting and air circulation.
"Material matters: Durability, obsolescence, adaptability and the embodied impacts of the building shell"
Mic Patterson, Director of Strategic Development at Schuco USA
1 AIA Continuing Education Unit
How long should a building last? How about the façade system? What are the impacts of longevity in buildings? What occurs faster in buildings, deterioration or obsolescence? What roles do innovation and complexity play in providing sustainable outcomes? This interactive discussion addresses these questions and more to provocative affect, providing something of a reality check on the current state of sustainability in contemporary architecture, and pointing to future trajectories of relevant exploration.
Mic Patterson has made a career study and practice of building facades. He is Director of Strategic Development for Schuco-USA, the Ambassador of Innovation & Collaboration for the Façade Tectonics Institute, and PhD candidate at the University of Southern California. He has taught, written and lectured on varied aspects of advanced façade technology, and is author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures (Wiley).
The Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop is presented by Boston Valley Terra Cotta with the University at Buffalo's School of Architecture and Planning
