In UB's Department of Architecture, the design studio is a living laboratory where synthesis is not a conclusion, but an ongoing pursuit. We champion design as a process, challenging students to bring together technical knowledge, history, theory, and cultural context through bold, situated experimentation.

Curatorial Statement

We cultivate an environment that embraces intellectually ambitious questions, the iterative development of compelling ideas, and the discoveries that emerge through rigorous process. Through hands-on experimentation, spatial reasoning, and persistent trial and error, the studio becomes a platform for intellectual risk-taking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-engaged inquiry.

Featuring selected work produced in studios from Fall 2025 through Spring 2026, IN PROCESS marks a vital moment in this endeavor. Our goals are threefold: to celebrate the ambition, rigor, and excellence of the design process and teaching at UB; to spark debate about how our studio pedagogy can evolve; and to build a shared resource through which students can engage with the inquiries, missteps, and breakthroughs of their peers.

Design is never truly finished, and neither is our shared project of teaching design as an open, rigorous, and collective process.
