Grace Ong Yan (2003-04)

Grace Ong Yan is an architectural historian and writer, educator, and designer whose scholarship explores alternate theories of modernism, intersections of media and the built environment, and interdisciplinary collaborations. She is currently Assistant Professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

After completing her year as the Reyner Banham Fellow at SUNY Buffalo, Ong Yan started and completed a Ph.D. in the History and Theory of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. She also holds an M.Arch. from Yale University, and B.Arch. from the University of Texas at Austin. Ong Yan recently published her second book, Building Brands: Corporations and Modern Architecture. In addition to Building Brands, she is the co-editor of Architect: The Pritzker Prize Laureates in their own Words, 1st and 2nd editions. Her scholarship has been published in Companion to the History of Architecture, Volume IV, Twentieth-Century Architecture, and the journal Design and Culture. She has presented her scholarship at College Art Association, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, Society of Architectural Historians, Interior Design Educators Council, Architecture Research Centers Consortium, and serves on the CAA Design Committee. She has taught at IE University in Segovia, The Barnes Foundation, Pratt Institute, and Parsons School of Design and Moore College of Art and Design. Ong Yan has practiced architecture independently with her work recognized and shown at Storefront for Art and Architecture and the Osaka International Design Competition. She has also practiced architecture at Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Pei Cobb Freed and Partners, Rafael Vinoly, and Gensler Studio 585 Branding Studio. She is a current board member and past president of Docomomo US/Greater Philadelphia.
