Blueprints for Belonging

The School of Architecture and Planning is pleased to welcome Professor john a. powell, director of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society at UC Berkeley, as the 2017 Will and Nan Clarkson Chair in Planning. An internationally recognized expert of civil rights and civil liberties with an eye towards processes of exclusion and inclusion, powell's scholarship and work speaks to movements for justice and equity in Buffalo. Drawing on his research and work with communities around the world, Professor powell will offer guidance on how to create communities of opportunity in our region and the role of planning and design in building equitable communities. Events with students, faculty, practitioners and members of the public throughout the week will put Professor powell’s ideas in dialogue with key initiatives unfolding in our School and the Buffalo-Niagara region.

Resources

The organizing committee for Prof. powell's visit has curated a list of over 100 books, journal articles, and multimedia resources that explore topics of race, space, place, and opportunity. Faculty and students from across disciplines are invited to explore this archive and incorporate these resources into their course syllabi and class projects and to develop independent study courses and reading groups around topics of equity and justice in planning and design.
