What is the role of public institutions of architecture and planning in our current political landscape? As federal funding priorities rapidly shift away from climate change research, social justice, and other significant issues that impact our communities and public environments, how might institutions work within a condition of 'deferred maintenance’ or abandonment by the state? What are the priorities of public schools for architecture and planning in 2025 and beyond?

This panel discussion will center on public education and its role in assessing and shaping public space: how do we understand it, inhabit it, and dream about its futures? As educators and students, how do we teach and learn to enable ways to think about collective space and building community? How do we design public space, not only through methods of problem-solving, but also in producing new public imaginaries? How can public education in architecture and planning empower our communities in these precarious and uncertain public contexts?
The panel will expand on a conversation initiated through a recently published book, "Curatorial Design: A Place Between," edited by Wilfried Kuehn and Dubravka Sekulić, which has included a series of essays on the theme of “Public School for Architecture.”
The School of Architecture and Planning is an AIA CES Approved Provider. This course is AIA CES Registered and approved for 1.5 Learning Unit (LU).
