Inspired by the traditional telescope home, Amanda Schone’s proposal starts as a small single-bedroom cottage, but with roof structure and foundational elements that facilitate additions.

This studio, led by clinical assistant instructor of architecture Stephanie Cramer instructor worked with urban planning professor Hiroaki Hata’s neighborhood master plan to design homes that fitted the area’s narrow 30-foot lots.

Particular challenges included contextual sensitivity and appropriate materials, with special attention to diversity of family structures. These included single-parent families, multigenerational households, in-law units, and other nontraditional households. Katerena Kalyoncu’s project is a home designed for millennials or seniors oriented toward companion-housing for mutual support.
