The familiar tones of the Westminster chimes emanating from the clock tower of the University at Buffalo’s Hayes Hall will have a more celebratory ring to them today as UB marks the grand reopening of its most historic and iconic building.

The festivities begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony starting at 10 a.m. and continue through Saturday with tours, exhibits throughout the building, and a symposium and lecture. The event also marks the 50th anniversary kickoff for the School of Architecture and Planning, which has called Hayes Hall home since 1977.

The $44 million renovation, which began in 2010 and concluded this year, transformed Hayes Hall into a state-of-the-art facility for learning and research in architecture and planning, while respecting the building’s unique history. Learn more about the renovation.

Constructed in the 1870s as an insane asylum, Hayes was listed on the National Register of Historic Places this summer, becoming the first building on a UB campus to garner this designation. Learn more about the history of Hayes Hall.
