Designing a More Resilient Tomorrow: UB’s International Competition and Exhibition
    2/6/26
On January 28, a bold and forward‑looking exhibition opened on the first floor of UB’s Crosby Hall, highlighting the visionary work created through the UB School of Architecture and Planning’s Resilient Campus Competition. Through this competition, the School invited architects, landscape architects, planners, and other allied design professionals worldwide to boldly envision UB’s South Campus as a socio-ecologically integrated landscape—one capable of responding to the urgent and interconnected challenges of climate change.

    3/5/26
On February 25, the UB School of Architecture and Planning concluded its two-part series, “Reimagining Black Futures During the Age of Authoritarianism,” with a dynamic panel discussion featuring two alumni and one current student. Moderated by Dr. Henry-Louis Taylor, Jr., professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and director of the Center for Urban Studies, the conversation invited the panelists to share how their experiences shaped their commitment to building more just communities—and how they believe the curriculum can evolve to equip future students with deeper, more imaginative tools to create lasting change.

    4/6/26
In 2007, Brian Carter, who was serving as dean of UB’s School of Architecture and Planning, had an idea for a new lecture series. His goal was to celebrate contemporary women architects whose work has made a lasting impact on both the profession and the built environment. The series was named in honor of Louise Blanchard Bethune—a pioneering Buffalo architect recognized as the first professional woman architect in the United States. It now has the distinction of being the longest-running academic lecture series dedicated to women in architecture in the nation.

Angela Keppel (MUP’09) Drives Planning Efforts that Shape Buffalo’s Tomorrow
    1/14/26
Angela Keppel (MUP ’09) is Buffalo through and through—a lifelong resident with a deep love for the city’s history and an enduring commitment to shaping its future. Keppel is fascinated by Buffalo’s unique character: a mix of hard-earned realism, particularly about our reputation, and an enduring “there’s always next year” optimism. That spirit, she notes, is nothing new. It dates back to the War of 1812, when Buffalo was burned to the ground during the final days of 1813.

Banham Fellowship Exhibition Explores Reuse in Architecture Through Objectile Adventures
    4/29/26
The lobby of UB’s Hayes Hall got a new floor this month—but it’s temporary. The 2026 Banham Fellow Exhibition—an installation by Celia Chaussabel titled Objectile Adventures: The Floor—celebrated its opening on April 20. Testing methods for designing, building, and telling stories with reused building materials, the project challenges us to consider the narratives embedded in the objects around us and how that affects our perception and use of them.

On the first day of the Next-Gen Architect graduate studio, Randy Fernando, adjunct instructor in the Department of Architecture, posed a question for the students: “What do you think AI will impact in architectural practice?” The general consensus was that it would make their work more efficient, speeding up production and improving outcomes. Over the course of the semester, that assumption would be rigorously put to the test.

Rethinking Design for Resilient Street Environments, Starting in Buffalo
    5/22/26
Research shows that the way we design neighborhood streets—and the materials that we use in public spaces—undermine efforts to combat the effects of climatic shifts in urban neighborhoods. While government officials largely recognize the need for change, practical barriers, such as logistical challenges and funding constraints, often prevent the implementation of solutions that could cool neighborhoods and strengthen long-term resilience.
