“You have, by this point, put your career on a vector,” Daniel B. Hess, UB professor and chair of urban planning told the Class of 2018 in his address to graduates. “However that vector may change… resilience and flexibility in your professional life are important. Do not limit yourself to a normal or expected routine. Become the main character in your own story."

This exhibition presents the inaugural showcase of selected works from all studios from Fall 2024 to Spring 2025. Our goals are threefold: first, to celebrate the excellence of design work and teaching at UB; second, to frame the exhibition as a platform for reviewing and debating our studio pedagogy; and third, to encourage all students to engage with these works as a shared resource and sustain the collective dialogue on advancing spatial professions.

Explore sketching as a form of inquiry in this exhibition of selected drawings by UB Professor Hiroaki (“Hiro”) Hata. Featuring more than 80 sketches made by Hata during his study of Italian Renaissance urbanism in the 1980s, the exhibition will open with a public reception on Oct. 7 and run through Nov. 18, 2022.

A colorful set of wooden cubes and cases is playing a foundational role in activating the Hayes Hall atrium gallery as a dynamic space for public events, exhibitions and even play.

March 1, 2023 | "Biosynthetic Design: Towards Adaptive Architecture"               

Sabin will present ongoing trans-disciplinary research and design spanning across the fields of cell biology, materials science, physics, fiber science, fashion, mechanical and structural engineering, and architecture.

The public lecture series for the 2022-23 academic year is dedicated to the entwined, even hopeful, themes of Recovery/Reclamation as a reflective response to the racially motivated shooting at the Tops supermarket on Buffalo’s East Side on May 14, 2022. In response, we will engage a range of speakers who address the subjects of recovery and reclamation through their work in an effort to place this recent tragedy within a broader history and perspective. 

We're pleased to announce the Spring '22 lineup in our Spring 2022 public programs as we convene thought leaders from across our disciplines to consider the socio-spatial disruptions of the past few years and offer critical reflection on the status quo. 

Our 2020-21 Lecture Series focuses on racial justice in our disciplines and the broader impacts that the work of architects and urban planners have on historically disenfranchised communities, to generate dialogue and prompt real change.

For the lecture portion of the event, Michael Tunkey, Denise Juron-Borgese and Stuart Green discuss the design process behind the 201 Ellicott mixed-use development project, including working within the Buffalo Green Code and navigating multiple community stakeholders to create affordable housing and a fresh food market in Buffalo’s Central Business District.
